scroop (SKROOP) - v., to emit a harsh, grating sound. n., a harsh sound or gry; esp. the crisp, crunching sound emitted when a bundle of silk is twisted and pressed tightly.
Silk and rayon are sometimes treated with acids to bring out the scrooping. Though in that case, I'd call it more a rustling than a grating sound, but that's apparently just me. Largely a Britishism, dating from the 1780s, apparently of imitative origin, possibly influenced by scrape and whoop.
