scuppernong
Aug. 7th, 2015 08:08 amscuppernong (SKUHP-er-nawng, SKUHP-er-nong) - n., a large greenish-bronze variety of the muscadine grape (Vitis rotundifolia) native to the Southeastern United States; a sweet, golden wine made from this.
First noticed by Europeans in the coastal plain of northereastern North Carolina (as logged by by Giovanni de Verrazzano while exploring the Cape Fear River). The name of the Scuppernong River, in the heart of that initial territory, started to be applied around 1810. The river's name, however, is uncertain -- almost certainly a Native American word, probably some Algonquin language.
