weft (WEFT) - n., in weaving, the thread woven horizontally through the vertical warp threads.
Also called the woof, for a bonus four-letter word -- not to mention warp as well. When you set up a loom, you have the warp threads, and the shuttle carries the weft (or woof) in and out of the warp. Weft is also sometimes used as a word for woven fabric, according to dictionaries, but I can't say I've ever seen that sense in practice. Goes back to Old English as weft or wefta, related to wefan, to weave, from conjectured Proto-Germanic form *weftaz, then PIE root *webh-.
