eldritch (EL-drich) - adj., weird, eerie, unearthly.
Most literally by the roots, from another realm (Old English rīce), though a minority view thinks that the el- is truncated from elf rather than else. An elfin connection was certainly brought into popular use, but long after the word had solidly appeared in Middle English, and much more in Scotland than England.
