charneco or charnico (char-NEE-koh) - n., (obs.) a sweet Portuguese wine.


Formerly popular in England in the 16th and 17th centuries. The only reason this shows up in dictionaries these days, though, is because Shakespeare mentions it in Henry VI Part 2, II.iii: "And here, neighbour, here's a cup of charneco." Origin uncertain but possibly from the township of Charneca da Caparica, now a suburb of Lisbon.
