almandine (AL-muhn-deen, AL-muhn-dain, AL-muhn-din) - n., a deep violet-red garnet (FeAl2Si3O12) found in metamorphic rocks.

A gemstone. Sometimes called almandite as well -- apparently incorrectly, though they've been doing it since 1868. This name has been in use in English since the 15th century, as an altered form of Middle English alemaundine, from Anglo-French alamandine, alteration of Old French alabandine, from Medieval Latin alabandina, lit. from Alabanda, which was an ancient city in Asia Minor where the stones were mined and cut.
