Theme week! -- growing words. Starting with just three letters:


awn (AWN) - n., a bristle growing on the end of the spikelets of grasses.


On the glume, to use the technical term. The little head that is first the flower then the collection of seeds. Can also refer generally to any sort of plant bristle, especially when it's part of a larger structure. This one dates back to at least Middle English awne, which is from either Old Norse ögn or Old English agen, both meaning chaff.
