Is it time for another bird week? It is time for another bird week. There are still a lot more birds that are fun to say.
tanager (TAN-uh-jer) - n., any of various New World songbirds of the family Thraupidae, whose males often have brightly colored plumage; any of various similar birds of the family Cardinalidae (the cardinals), such as the scarlet tanager.
Plus a few in Fringillidae (the finches) as well -- both these and the Cardinalidae were formerly in Thraupidae, based on size and plumage, but were reassigned based on genetic comparisons. All told, around 240 species. The ones around here are western tanagers (Piranga ludoviciana):

Further east is the scarlet tanager and summer tanager. The name was adopted in 1844 from the Latin name tanagra given by Linnaeus in 758, an alteration of Portuguese tangará, from Tupí taŋgará.
