iguana (ih-GWAH-nuh) - n., any of several usually large, usually crested, herbivorous American lizards of the family Iguanidae; especially, the two species of the genus Iguana; especially the green iguana (I. iguana).


The last being the one most often kept as a pet. The name has been in English since at least 1555, adopted from Spanish, from some Caribbean Arawak language, probably Taíno, iwana, the native name for the critter.
