anoa (uh-NOH-uh) - n., either of two species of small forest water buffalo (genus Bubalus, subgenus Anoa) with a deer-like shape and straight, sharp-tipped horns.


And not, as I keep expecting, a kind of lizard -- so I'm posting this word learned from Words With Friends in an attempt to get this straight in my head. The smallest bovine species. The two species are the mountain anoa (B. quarlesi) and the lowland anoa (B. depressicornis), and both are found only on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi (formerly known as Celebes). The name comes via Indonesian Malay from either the Makassarese or Buginese languages of southern Sulawesi. A lowland anoa:
