hexose (HEK-sohs) - n., any monosaccharide (simple sugar) that contains six carbon atoms per molecule.


All of them have the chemical formula C6H12O6, arranged in different configurations. Glucose and fructose are both hexoses. Coined in 1890 from Greek hex-, six + -ose, suffix for sugars, created by extraction from gluose, from Greek glukus, sweet.
