hexose

hexose (HEK-sohs) - n., any monosaccharide (simple sugar) that contains six carbon atoms per molecule.


All of them have the chemical formula C₆H₁₂O₆, arranged in different configurations. Glucose and fructose are both hexoses. Coined in 1890 from Greek hex-, six + -ose, suffix for sugars, created by extraction from gluose, from Greek glukus, sweet.
