Something that garnishes. (You garnish with garniture the way you furnish with furniture.) Sometimes, specifically, it's a matched set of decorative objects. Sometimes, even further, it's a matched set of plate armor, with pieces that can be swapped out for different occasions (such as parade pieces for jousting pieces, which provide more protection for being hit from the right side). Arrived in English around 1530 from French, where it meant just equipment, and further back in Old French garneture, accessory for a saddle.
