shirr

shirr (SHUR) - v., to make gathers in textiles by drawing together parallel threads or by parallel stitching; to bake (a shelled egg) in a shallow baking dish.


The first makes shirring, the second makes shirred eggs. (Yum.) The sewing sense came first, dating to the 1840s, but the origin of the term is unknown.
