francolin (FRANG-kuh-lin) - n., any of about 40 species of Eurasian and African partridges with sharply spurred legs.


Formerly all in genus Francolin, but the African species have now been split off into four separate genera. All are game birds, and some have been introduced in other parts of the world, including Hawaii. The name dates to the 16th century, taken from French, which got it from Italian francolino, which got it from who knows where -- literally, it's origin unknown from there. This one's a grey francolin from India:
