uropod (YOOR-uh-pod) - n., either of the paired appendages of the last abdominal segment of certain crustaceans.


Specifically, the fanning out part of the tails of lobsters, shrimps, and a few similar animals. In this picture of a Norway lobster, the middle part of the fan is the telson, and the rest is part of the uropod:

Coined around 1890 from uro-, relating to urine (from Ancient Greek ouron, urine) + -pod, foot (from Ancient Greek pous), because this is also the segment that contains the anus. Yeah, IDK.
