sumpsimus (SUHMP-suh-muhs) - n., adherence to a correct word or practice while rejecting an erroneous but more common one; a person who stubbornly adheres to such correctness.

Or insisting on a formerly correct usage in the face of changing language use. Not that I know anyone like that around here. This word pairs with mumpsimus (which I've posted before, tho' I cannot quickly locate it) and the story of both words is explained there. Coined in the 1540s from Latin sūmpsimus, we have taken, part of the former post-communion prayer Quod ōre sūmpsimus, Domine, pūrā mente capiāmus “What we have taken by mouth, O Lord, may we keep with a pure mind.”
