Also in the scanty senses, a verb (to skimp) and adverb (scarcely). In the neat senses, also sometimes spelled gimp (same pronunciation). Wiktionary claims this is dated, but other dictionaries (including British usage dictionaries) don't mention this, so we'll have to ask a few native speakers of the right dialect to confirm or deny. Dates to around 1500, origin unknown.
