compound word
Nov. 15th, 2021 08:07 amTheme week! -- a buncha words having to do with language.
compound word - n., a word composed of two or more stems.
Such as pickpocket, drive-in, and city council member. English is unusual among Germanic languages in that many compounds, especially ad-hoc and recently made ones, are written as two separate words. There's a general trend over time to mush them together, however, often with an intermediate stage of a hyphen between them, and you'd do well to check a current dictionary for best practices.
