interquel (IN-ter-kwel) - n., an installment in a series of works that is set chronologically between two of its predecessors.

Not a sequel that takes place after nor a prequel that takes place before, but an interquel that takes place between. Rogue One takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and The Wind Through the Keyhole takes place between Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla. Appears to have been coined in 1994 by Francis Muir in rec.arts.books, but appears two years later in a New York Times book review without any fuss. Some people use midquel as a synonym, while others use it for a work that takes place in the middle of a previous installment, such as A Horse and His Boy in the middle of the timeskip of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
