Also called in chess circles a duffer or a woodpusher (supposedly -- I'd never met that last before). I can see this being useful in other contexts. Dates from the late 1940s, origin uncertain but nearly universally supposed to have been from German Patzer, bungler, derived form of patzen, to bungle.
