wheatear (HWEET-eer, WEET-eer) - n., any of several small flycatchers (genus Oenanthe) of Eurasia and North America, especially those with a white rump, often specifically the northern wheatear (O. oenanthe).


I mean, c'mon -- wheatear. But don't go looking for tufts on its head or for it to perch on waves of grain -- the name is actually an alteration by euphemism from its Middle English name white-arse, including a middle form as whiteears, taken to be a plural form and singularized.
