serotinal (si-ROT-n-l, ser-uh-TAYN-l) - adj., of, pertaining to, or occurring in late summer.
On a day when dictionary.com runs hiemal as appropriate for the northern hemisphere, where it's the winter solstice, I'm going contrary. No, it's also not appropriate for the southern hemisphere either, where it's the summer solstice. So, contrary indeed. Coined at the end of the 19th century (1898 is first citation) from Latin serotinus, coming late, from the adverb sērō, late, from the adjective sērus, late/slow/tardy (which also gave several Romance languages their word for evening, including French soir and Italian sera).
Oh, and a good solstice, everyone.
