mulgara (mul-GAR-uh) - n., either of two rat-sized carnivorous marsupials (genus Dasycercus) with a pointed snout and large eyes native to central Australia.
Closely related to the Tasmanian devil and quolls. The name is attested from the 1940s, probably from the Wangganguru name, mardagura. It's kinda a cutie, actually -- this is a crest-tailed mulgara (D. cristicauda):
