ska (SKAH) - n., a style of Jamaican dance music originating in the late 1950s, combining elements of Caribbean calypso and mento with American jazz and rhythm and blues.
Has a relatively fast tempo, a shuffling rhythm, and strong accents on the off-beats, and is a precursor to reggae and rocksteady, and an influence on many flavors of punk. Still played today. Origin of the name is completely obscure, and there's several theories, including an onomatopoeias for a guitar sound.
