lyophilize (lai-OF-uh-laiz) - v., to freeze-dry.

The scientific jargon for drying by freezing in a high vacuum, which is exactly what it means to freeze-dry -- used as best I can tell largely in medical contexts. Coined in 1894 from Ancient Greek roots lyo- (combining form of Greek lýein, to loose/dissolve/set free) + -philic, loving ... which, nope, I don't see the connection. I mean, it's literally the opposite of dissolving. Maybe it's setting loose = losing the water? IDK.
