chook (CHOOK) - n., (Aus/NZ) a chicken, esp. a hen.


Or rather originally/especially Australia and New Zealand, as I've heard it here in the States. Most dictionaries claim it's imitative, but Wiktionary quotes someone (unattributed) that it's from Irish dialect chook, a call made to poultry or pigs, from Irish tsiug/tsiuc, whcih is a call to chickens, the sound made by chickens, and a baby word for chickens, and compares it to English buck-buck-buck.
