dickcissel
Nov. 27th, 2023 07:46 amTheme week! Birds with names that make me giggle because I am actually twelve years old. FWIW, these have all been run by a focus group of a ten-year-old, whose reactions ranged from "What the--!?" to "That's inappropriate!" to "Who named these!?!?" so I consider myself on pretty solid ground here. Especially with the:
dickcissel (dik-SIS-uhl) - n., a black-throated bunting (Spiza americana) of eastern and central United States.

Thanks, WikiMedia!
I say bunting because it looks rather like one, or maybe a wayward finch, but actually it's in the same family as cardinals, go fig. The name is not because an ornithologist secretly hated it, but after its call. Yes, really, that's what it sounds like it's saying.
