You know, That Guy who's always just a bit short and needs you to stand him a drink, he'll pay you back next Tuesday. Originally, as in the 1570s, with the spelling lancepresado, this was the lowest rank non-commissioned officer in the army, now called lance-corporal, but by the 18th century it acquired this slang sense -- a 1674 dictionary of thieve's cant defined it as "he that comes into company with but two pence in his pocket."
