Time for another 5x5s -- that is, a week of five words of five letters. Because I happened to have a few stacked up in my queue.
winze or windz (WINZ) - (mining) n., a steeply inclined minor connecting passage between levels of a mine.
Minor because there usually isn't any winding gear, the presence of which differentiates a winze from a shaft. This confuses me, because the etymology given is "apparently" from plural noun winds, in the now obsolete sense of winding gear. I'm guessing the exact technical sense has shifted over the centuries.
