kedge (KEJ) - (naut.) v., to warp (a vessel) by carrying out a small anchor in a boat, dropping it overboard, and hauling the vessel up to it; a small anchor, of the sort used for kedging.
I'm not posting this because it was used in a recent XKCD, because at this point my queue is a month long -- and a month ago, I was rereading the Hornblower novels. Nonetheless, I did smile when I saw the coincidence. The origin is uncertain, with suggestions including an alteration of cadge in an obsolete sense of to fasten, and of Middle English caggen, to tie.
