fumarole - n., a vent that releases volcanic gases and steam.
Often found around volcanoes during later stages of an eruption, but can also be found near geysers, mud-springs, other geothermal areas. This is a good picture of one at Námafjall in Iceland (I can attest to its accuracy). From Italian fumarola, from Neapolitan dialect, from Latin fūmāriolum, smoke hole, diminutive of Latin fūmārium, smoke chamber, from fūmus, smoke.
