whelm - v., to overturn, submerge; to overwhelm.

Originally, to cover, which when applied to boats meant to cover with water. The shift in meaning seems to have taken place somewhere between Old and Middle English. Overwhelm is simply an intensified form.

Bonus new slang term:

DDo$ - Distributed Denial of Dollars, a form of denial of financial services.
