ekpyrotic - adj., of or relating to the cyclic model of Big Bang cosmology.

Coined in 2001 by cosmologist Paul Steinhardt from Greek εκπυρωσις, conflagration, which in ancient Stoic philosophy referred to the destruction and recreation of the world in fire, but in modern cosmology to the theory that the universe will be destroyed in a Big Crunch and recreated in another Big Bang, in what's sometimes called a Big Bounce or, now, the ekpyrotic scenario. The cyclic models have been around since the 1930s, only the name is new. Pronounced ek-peer-AW-tic, I believe, but I could be wrong.
