Especially to do so with positive statements, for some reason. I've probably encountered it outside the novels of Georgette Heyer, but I can't think of where. From the late 18th century, from Latin assevērātus, spoken in earnest, past participle of assevērāre, from ad-, toward + sevērus, serious + verbal suffix.
