orology (aw-ROL-uh-jee or oh-ROL-uh-jee) - n., the study of mountains.

Particularly the study of mountain formation, but also the branch of physical geography that deals with mountains -- and indeed, orography is the more common term for it. But I prefer this one because it has the adjectival form orological. Coined some time in the 19th century from Greek roots óros, mountain + -ology.

Excellent one! Now I am going to think of ticking mountains of course but it is still a great word.

I was thinking of using the peaks as gnomens, myself.

Another good word in the family: orogeny, the making of mountains.
