muntjac (MUNT-jak) - n., any of various small deer of the genus Muntiacus of southeast Asia with short antlers, small tusks on the upper jaw, and a cry like a dog's bark.


Including the nearby islands, as the name comes from Sundanese, an Austronesian language of western Java, mənyčək. Yes, apparently they really use schwas in the standard romanization of the language. Borrowed into English around 1798. Have some pix of cuties.

Also called barking deer.
