rupestrian
Aug. 16th, 2010 07:17 amrupestrian (ru-PES-tree-en) - adj., made of rock; appearing or written upon rock.
Not to be confused with rupestrine, living among rocks (as mountain goats), or rupestral, living on rocks (as lichen), though they are all from the same root -- Modern Latin rupestris, on or of rock, from Latin rupes, rock. A rupestrian sculpture is one carved from marble or whatnot, while a rupestrian newspaper is what Fred Flintstone reads. Er, read. Or perhaps a better example would be petroglyphs.
