gamboge (gam-BOHJ or gam-BOOZH) - n., a strong reddish yellow color; an orange to brown resin from certain southeast Asian trees (genus Garcinia) used as a yellow pigment and cathartic.
There is some disagreement over the exact shade of yellow, but it's not a pure yellow -- possibly a dark mustard yellow is the best way to describe it. The resin was introduced to Europe by the Dutch in the 16th century. Borrowed around 1712 from New Latin gambogium, alteration of cambugium, borrowed around 1610 from Portuguese Camboja, Cambodia. Yes, we have a color called Cambodian.
