In both cases, especially of a religious text. A person who practices these is an exegete or an eisegete. The US pronunciation of both is given first, then the UK pronunciation. Exegesis was borrowed in 1619 from Latin, from Greek exḗgēsis, an interpretation, explanation, from ex-, out + (h)ēgeîsthai, to guide. Eisegesis was coined from its model in 1892, swapping out ex- for eis-, a form of -in, into.
