As in certain bats and monkeys. I'm not sure why, but the only examples I can think of are New World animals, though I'm sure there must be others elsewhere. Coined in the 1830s from Greek roots karpós, fruit + -phagos, eating, an adjectival derivative of phágein, to eat.
