metaphrase (MET-uh-frayz) - n., a literal, word-for-word translation. v., to translate, especially literally; to change the form of a text, such as from verse to prose.

Contrast paraphrase. Borrowed in 1609 from Late Latin, from Greek metáphrasis, a paraphrasing, a change of phrasing, from meta-, after phrazein, to tell, show.
