hyporheic (heye-poh-REE-tik) - adj., in, of, or pertaining to the region of saturated sediment or bedrock below and around the bed of a running stream.


Where surface water and groundwater mix, as do nutrients and critters. This is a rather specialized term from hydrology (the study of water) coined by Traian Orghidan in 1959 from Greek roots hypo-, below and rheos, flow. Which is the main reason I ran this: "below the flow, dude."
