ragi (RAG-ee) - n., a cereal grass (Eleusine coracana) cultivated in arid regions of Africa and Asia, also known as finger millet; the grain from same.

Produces a somewhat bitter flour, but because it grows in arid climates and adapts well to altitude, where it is grown it's the main staple. The wild species is native to the Ethiopian highlands, but it was imported to India at least a few thousand years ago. The English name is from Hindi, probably Deccan Hindi, rāgī, borrowed in the 1780s.
