pergola (PUR-guh-luh) - n., a trellis-work roof used to support and train climbing plants; a colonnade or passageway with such a roof.

From Italian, from Late Latin pergula, a projecting eave (from pergere, to go forward). It was first in English used by John Evelyn in 1654.
