Tree-ring dating. Leonardo da Vinci was apparently the first person to note that the thickness of annual growth rings in trees is determined by the conditions under which they grew. The field first developed in the second half of the 19th century, but the current name wasn't coined until around 1928, from Greek roots déndron, tree + chrónos, time + -logy, study of (originally from logos, word).
