haplography (hap-LOG-ruh-fee) - n., the accidental omission, when writing a word, of one of a repeated letter or syllable.

So mispell for misspell, Missippi for Mississippi, endontics for endodontics, and so on. The correct-in-English spelling of idolatry is a haplographic descendant of the original Greek eidololatreia. Contrast with dittography, where a letter or group of letters is accidentally duplicated. Coined in the late 1880s from Greek roots haplo-, single/singly + graphos, writing.
