parge

parge (PARJ) - n., a coat of mortar or plaster applied to a masonry wall. v., to coat with parge.

To smooth it, seal it, or provide an ornamental surface. Can also be simple whitewash, if all you're doing is sealing, or even a rough mortar inside a chimney flue. Shortened form of parget, which has been around since the early 14th century and is also still in use, itself from Middle French pargeter, par-/per-, thoroughly + geter, variant of jeter, to throw -- so stuff you fling all over the wall. Splattertime!

I've always loved the collective pargetry.
