chyron

chyron (KAI-ron) - n., electronically generated captions superimposed on a television or movie screen.

Typically in what's called the lower third, where there is usually less image of interest. Can be directly related to the current scene or providing additional information (as in the scrolling headlines on news or sports channels). This is a trademark gone generic: the Chyron Corporation developed in the 1970's of a character-generating device that created such captions while adjusting the edges based on the background image (it was originally Chiron, but they changes it to a -y- because of a prior trademark).
