Can be directly related to the current scene or providing additional information (as in the scrolling headlines on news or sports channels). This is a trademark gone generic: the Chyron Corporation developed in the 1970's of a character-generating device that created such captions while adjusting the edges based on the background image (it was originally Chiron, but they changes it to a -y- because of a prior trademark).
