brassard (BRAS-ahrd, bruh-SARD) - n., a badge or armband with an insignia or identifying mark; armor for the upper arm.

The latter being the original meaning. The modern brassard is used by military and police personnel to hold identifying marks, especially when they are not part of the ordinary uniform, such as an MP armband or a badge indicating being part of a UN force. Adopted in the 1820s from French, going back to Middle French, from bras, arm, which goes back to Latin.
